#1 Question Asked of Home Schooling Families ;
"What About Socialization ?"

[pencil bar]

Many people have the mistaken idea that home schooled children are missing out on "socialization". Home schooled children are shown to have social skills far and above the public school attenders. Home school parents as a rule involve their children in many peer mixing activities, ones that ENHANCE the child. Learning social skills from adults, makes sense. Who do you want your children to emulate? Other immature children? Or responsible, mature citizens?

We are sheltering our children from "social contagion": the habits, manners, gestures, vulgarities, obscenities, deceptions, ridicule and rivalry that runs rampant in the schools today. We are forming moral, hardworking, diligent and Godly individuals to go into the world and form moral, hardworking, diligent and Godly individuals.

The Home is the original school and public school is just a poor substitution. The State cannot out parent most parents. Recent finding showed that fully half of the teacher applicants scored lower in math than the average high school junior, and a third scored lower in English. Personality ratings were deplorable. It is better for children to be positively socialized by parents and the examples set by parents than to be negatively socialized by peers, becoming more dependent and influenced by other children than by mother and father.

Public school students are learning more about how to conform to society rather than how to read and write. How to measure up against peers rather than obedience to parents and kindness to others. They are involved in a vicious game of tug-o-war, with parents on one side pulling for values and respect and selflessness, and society on the other, pulling for self first and "make your own values" concepts. A child will be drawn to the side that pulls the hardest.

According to God, the responsibility for a child's soul does not rest on the shoulders of society, but on the parents to whom that soul was gifted. In short, parents have a bigger stake in their childs future and eternity than does ANYONE else. Every parent should raise their child with an eye to the future. The future of their child and the Kingdom to come. We are commanded to raise equipped soldiers for our Lord. Should you throw the children "to the wolves" without first equipping them with a defense ? A firm foundation in their spiritual life, morals, principals, AND education will enable them to "face the world" with confidence and strength.
